The Healthy Habit of Prayer: Making Time for God Each Day

The Healthy Habit of Prayer: Making Time for God Each Day

When we think about healthy habits, we often think about eating nutritious foods, drinking more water, getting enough sleep, exercising, or taking time to rest.

But there is another part of our well-being that is easy to overlook: our spiritual health.

Just as we make time to care for our bodies, we can make time each day to care for our hearts and souls. One of the simplest ways to do that is through prayer.

Prayer doesn't have to be complicated. It doesn't have to be a long conversation, and you don't need the perfect words. Prayer is simply making time to talk with God, listen, give thanks, ask for guidance, and place the things weighing on our hearts into His hands.

Begin Your Day With Prayer

Imagine starting your morning before the notifications, emails, social media, and responsibilities begin.

Instead of immediately reaching for your phone, take a few quiet moments with God.

Find a peaceful place. Take a deep breath. Be still.

You might begin with something as simple as:

“Father, thank You for giving me another day. Please guide me today. Help me to see the blessings around me and give me wisdom in all that I do.”

Those few moments can become an important part of your morning routine.

A Simple Five-Minute Prayer Habit

If you aren't currently in the habit of praying each day, start small. You don't have to set aside an hour.

Try five minutes.

1. Be Still

Take a few slow breaths and allow yourself to become quiet.

Life can be noisy. Giving ourselves permission to stop for a few moments can help us turn our attention toward God.

2. Give Thanks

Think of three things you are thankful for.

They don't have to be big things.

Maybe it is a beautiful sunrise, a warm cup of coffee, a friend who called, your family, your work, or simply the opportunity to wake up to another day.

Gratitude can change the way we look at what we already have.

3. Give God Your Worries

We all carry things that we cannot fix or control.

Instead of allowing those worries to take over our thoughts, we can bring them to God in prayer.

Tell Him what is on your heart.

Release what you cannot control and trust Him with it.

4. Ask for Guidance

Before beginning your day, ask God to guide your decisions, conversations, work, and relationships.

A simple prayer might be:

“Lord, guide my thoughts, my words, and my actions today. Help me to walk in wisdom, kindness, patience, and love.”

5. Carry a Scripture With You

Choose one Bible verse or even a short phrase to think about throughout the day.

When you feel overwhelmed, pause and bring that Scripture back to your mind.

It can become a small reminder that God is with you even in the middle of a busy day.

Prayer Doesn't Have to Be Perfect

Sometimes we may avoid prayer because we think we don't know how to pray.

But prayer isn't about saying everything perfectly.

God already knows our hearts.

There may be days when your prayer is long and full of words. Other days, it may simply be:

“Jesus, I need You today.”

That is a prayer.

There may be mornings when you feel peaceful and thankful. There may also be days when you are tired, discouraged, confused, or hurting.

Bring those days to God, too.

Prayer is not about pretending everything is okay. It is about bringing our real selves before God.

Make Prayer Part of Your Evening, Too

Prayer doesn't have to end in the morning.

Before going to bed, take a few moments to reflect on your day.

Ask yourself:

  • What am I thankful for today?
  • Where did I see God's goodness?
  • Is there something I need to surrender?
  • Is there someone I need to pray for?
  • What do I need to ask God to help me with tomorrow?

Then give the day back to God.

“Father, thank You for walking with me today. Thank You for the blessings I noticed and the ones I didn't. Forgive me where I fell short and help me learn from today. I place tomorrow in Your hands. Give me peaceful rest tonight. Amen.”

Mind, Body & Soul

At Western Border and Co, we believe there is something beautiful about slowing down and creating with our hands.

Whether we are making jewelry, felting, sewing, burning a design onto a hat, or simply sitting together and creating, those moments can give us an opportunity to slow down.

And perhaps that is where prayer can become part of our everyday lives, too.

Mind. Body. Soul.

We can nourish our bodies with healthy choices.

We can give our minds moments of rest.

And we can nurture our souls by spending time with God.

Prayer doesn't require a special place or expensive equipment. It can happen at the kitchen table, in the workshop, in the car, on the porch, or while taking a quiet walk.

It can become part of the rhythm of our everyday lives.

Start Small and Stay Consistent

You don't have to completely change your routine tomorrow.

Start with five minutes.

Five minutes to breathe.

Five minutes to give thanks.

Five minutes to pray.

Five minutes to remember that you don't have to carry everything by yourself.

Over time, those few minutes can become something you look forward to each day.

Pray first. Breathe deeply. Give thanks. Trust God. Then begin your day.

And at the end of the day, pause again.

Give thanks.

Let go.

Rest.

Tomorrow is another day, and God's grace will be there when you wake.

A Prayer for Today

Father,

Thank You for this day and for the many blessings You have placed in my life.

Help me slow down enough to recognize Your presence. Guide my thoughts, my words, and my actions. Give me wisdom when I make decisions, patience when things don't go as planned, and peace when I feel overwhelmed.

Help me release the things I cannot control and trust You with my future.

Use my hands, my creativity, my work, and my life for Your glory.

Help me remember that caring for my mind, body, and soul is part of caring for the life You have given me.

Today, I choose to pause, pray, give thanks, and trust You.

Amen.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10

What healthy habit will you begin today?

Maybe it starts with just five quiet minutes and a simple prayer.
