The Warm Glow of Candles: A Christmas Tradition of Faith, Love and Family
There is something special about the gentle glow of a candle. Whether we light one for a romantic evening, gather around the table with friends and family during the holidays, or use one during a quiet moment of prayer, candles bring warmth, peace, and comfort into our lives.
Different cultures and faiths have their own traditions for using candles. Some light them in churches, while others use them at home as part of prayer and reflection. For me, one of the most beautiful candle traditions is the Advent wreath, which I learned about while living in Europe.
The Advent Wreath: Preparing Our Hearts for Christmas
The Advent wreath is a Christian tradition that helps us prepare for the coming of Jesus Christ. It traditionally consists of a wreath made from evergreen branches and four candles. Each Sunday during the four weeks leading up to Christmas, we light another candle.
-
First Sunday: Light the first candle.
-
Second Sunday: Light two candles.
-
Third Sunday: Light three candles.
-
Fourth Sunday: Light all four candles as Christmas approaches.
In many Christian/Catholic traditions, the candles represent hope, peace, joy, and love. Some families also add a fifth candle, called the Christ candle, which is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
The Beautiful Meaning Behind the Materials
I love how the natural materials used in an Advent wreath carry such beautiful meanings.
-
Evergreen branches: Evergreens remain green throughout the seasons, even during the harshness of winter. They symbolize God's faithfulness and remind us to remain steadfast in our Christian faith.
-
Holly leaves: The prickly leaves of holly remind us of the Crown of Thorns worn by Jesus during His crucifixion and the great sacrifice He made for us.
-
Pinecones: Pinecones contain seeds that can grow into new trees, symbolizing the Resurrection and the promise of new life through Jesus Christ.
-
Candles: The growing light reminds us that Christmas is drawing near and encourages us to prepare our hearts for His coming.
What a beautiful reminder that even the simplest things in nature can teach us about faith, hope, and God's love!
Celebrating Christmas with Jesus and Family
Christmas is such a wonderful time of year. The decorations, delicious food, candlelight, and laughter around the table make the season special. But the greatest blessing is remembering why we celebrate Christmas in the first place: the coming of Jesus Christ.
Celebrating Christmas with Jesus and my family fills my heart with gratitude. We are so blessed to have Him in our lives every day, not just during the Christmas season.
This year, I encourage you to create your own special moments. Light a candle during dinner, say a prayer with your family, or begin the tradition of an Advent wreath in your home. You don't need an elaborate celebration to make Christmas meaningful. Sometimes, all it takes is a candle, a prayer, and time with the people you love.
May your home be filled with warmth, your heart with peace, and your Christmas season with the love of Jesus.
From my heart to yours, may God bless you and your family this Christmas and throughout the year!
With love and blessings,
