Passing Down the Craft: Mentoring the Next Generation of Felting Artists or Wool Growers

At Western Border & Co, I believe creativity is a gift from God, and those gifts are meant to be shared. Throughout my journey as an artist, designer, and small business owner, I have learned that success is not just about creating beautiful products—it is about inspiring others, sharing knowledge, and helping the next generation discover their own talents.

In 2027, I am opening my heart and my experience to mentor five young 4-H members or aspiring fiber artists who want to explore the beautiful world of needle felting, wool art, and creative entrepreneurship.

My hope is to walk alongside these young creators for one year, helping them learn not only the art of felting but also what it takes to turn creativity into a meaningful journey.

Sharing the Art of Needle Felting

Needle felting is a timeless craft that transforms natural wool fibers into beautiful works of art. With just wool, creativity, patience, and a felting needle, artists can create animals, landscapes, ornaments, wearable art, and so much more.

I want to share the techniques I have learned through creating my own felting kits, designing artwork, teaching workshops, and building a creative business.

The mentorship will include learning:

✨ Turning ideas into finished artwork
✨ Photographing and sharing creations
✨ Understanding the handmade marketplace

A Special Opportunity for Sheep Growers & Wool Producers

I would also love to connect with a sheep grower who naturally dyes and prepares wool for artists.

There is something truly special about knowing where your materials come from. The connection between the land, the animals, the farmer, and the artist tells a story that cannot be replicated.

Working with local wool producers would allow these young artists to better understand:

🐑 The importance of supporting agriculture
🐑 How handmade products carry a story

From the sheep pasture to the artist’s hands, every step matters.

Learning More Than Just a Craft

As a small business owner, I have learned many lessons along the way—some easy, some challenging. Building a creative business takes faith, perseverance, patience, and the willingness to keep learning.

My goal is to share the business side of creativity as well:

• How to price handmade products
• How to photograph and market artwork
• How to tell your story
• How to build confidence as a creator
• How to turn a passion into a possibility

Whether these young artists continue with felting, agriculture, entrepreneurship, or another creative path, I hope this mentorship gives them tools they can carry throughout life.

Investing in the Future

The Western lifestyle has always been about passing down traditions, skills, and stories from one generation to the next. I believe our creative gifts are no different.

If we want handmade arts, agriculture, and craftsmanship to continue, we have to encourage young people to pick up the tools, try something new, and believe in what they can create.

I am excited about the possibility of mentoring five young artists for the next year and watching their creativity grow.

Sometimes the greatest thing we can create is not a product—it is confidence, opportunity, and a future full of possibilities.
